kpop fav of the day: music videos from 2010 to 2012 #23, spy by super junior

Every day in May we’re counting down our favorite kpop music videos from 2010 to 2012. Crashing through the #23 spot issss…

Spy by Super Junior.

During this time period, Super Junior put out music videos that showed off their choreography. They would usually feature one or two sets and have continuous dance shots interspersed with closeups.

Spy doesn’t break from that, but it does put a new spin on it and breaks from the aesthetics of the time in a clever way to suit the song. Before we get into the video, I want to take you even further back in time to the 1960s. To this guy:

The name’s Bond. James Bond, played by Sean Connery.

In 1962, the Bond film Dr. No was released. The movie was a box office success, and it marked the introduction of what’s called the gun barrel sequence. The concept is the work of Maurice Binder, and it appears in some form in nearly every James Bond movie since.

Basically, it involves viewing James Bond through a circle meant to symbolize the barrel of a gun.

Here are some examples:

This is the original from Dr. No.

This is from Diamonds Are Forever released in 1971.

Here’s the opening from The Man With the Golden Gun released in 1973. It starred Roger Moore.

Over time, the convention changed to just include the gun barrel. You can see that in 1995’s Goldeneye:

It’s still around even today. In 2012’s Skyfall, they put it at the end of the movie:

Now that you’ve seen some of the examples, you’ll recognize these shots from Super Junior’s MV right away.

To reinforce the classic James Bond aesthetic, much of the video is black and white . The boys wear suits throughout just like 007 does in the old films, though their suits are a bit bolder than anything MI6’s top spy ever wore. And they should be because James Bond never had moves like this:

Because of its nods to film history, Super Junior’s Spy has found its way onto our list. Stream the entire video released August 12, 2012, below, and come back tomorrow to discover #22.
