Every day until the end of April, we’ll highlight some of our favorite kpop girl group vocalists on the way to #1.
I wasn’t really a fan of girl groups until a friend of mine INSISTED I give Mamamoo a try–I’ll admit it. I trusted her tastes, so I did it, but I was wary of what I was walking into because historically, I hadn’t found any groups of ladies that I dug.
From the first song I heard of theirs, I realized she was right and I was wrong and also that Hwasa was a thing and immediately fell in love. Since then, my heart has opened to other girl groups, so, thank you, I guess, Shaira.
Part of what drew me in were the voices. Girl groups that are at least a few years old have gone through at least a phase where they all… sang a certain way. Not that there’s anything wrong with all the aegyo, as it’s part of what makes GGs unique and fun, but I was surprised to hear from the very beginning that the voices of Mamamoo were all really mature.
And among those voices, the one that stood out to me most was Hwasa. She’s got a voice that mirrors her personality in that it’s kind of tough but still kind of soft, unique but pretty. It’s a bit breathy but it never struggles to hit the high notes when it’s asked of her, and when she’s not changing registers, she hangs out in a nice alto range that is rare in kpop and that I super, super love.
So, pretty much, I can pretty much thank Hwasa for making me into a girl group stan. Because of her talent and her door-opening abilities for me, she lands at #16 on our list.
I’ve put together some of my fav Hwasa vocals in a quick playlist below.
