Every day until the end of April, we’ll highlight some of our favorite kpop girl group vocalists on the way to #1.
Cheweing her way to the #16 spot isssss…
…Lia of ITZY.
My favorite songs by ITZY are fun bops, the kind of tunes I like to play at full volume while I’m driving with the windows down. But if you stop at those tracks and don’t do any deeper digging, you might miss out on just how amazing a singer Lia really is.
Because she can really, really, REALLY sing.
There’s a video on YouTube from her predebut days at JYP that absolutely blows me away. Given that she’s only 20 now, she had to still be a teenager when it was made, but her voice shows off incredible maturity, and she demonstrates a keen intuition of where to place every note in her register to keep her performance pitch perfect. Her lows are mellow, and her high notes land solidly.
What I love most about Lia’s voice is her belting. When some female singers belt, their voices become too harsh and they sound like they’re almost shouting. But not Lia. Her belting seems effortless, not forced at all. She can put tremendous power behind her notes without losing the melody, and you can hear that a lot in ITZY’s songs.
For all that she is, Lia has found her way into our hearts and onto our list of favorite kpop girl group vocalists. Check out this quick playlist of solos and come back tomorrow to meet #15.
