Hopping her way to the #20 spot issss…
…Jiwon of fromis_9.
I’m going to be honest with you guys–explaining why someone is a good singer is really difficult. Seriously–think about a vocalist that you really admire and now try to put into words why you picked them. It’s never easy, and with some people, it’s especially hard.
That’s where I’m at with Jiwon. Like…how?
How do I capture those soaring high notes with mere syllables? I could point out that they’re always pleasing and warm, even at the very tip-top of her range. I can assert how stable she is even in her head voice. But that falls short of putting you in that moment when her voice opens up and sweeps you into those melodic highs that enlivens every nerve.
And how do I describe the gut-wrenching emotion she can pour into a song like she does in her covers of Lady Gaga‘s Shallow and I’ll Never Love Again? I can tell you that her expressiveness brings tears to my eyes but you don’t know me–maybe I cry over every damn thing. (Spoiler: I don’t)
And how can I possibly tell you how the power of her belting is something you feel in your soul? It’s going to sound like hyperbole, like it’s the kind of thing you just say when someone’s performance moves you.
Anything I try to tell you about Jiwon is going to far short of accurately reflecting what it’s like to listen to her, so I’m going to stop here and let you do that. I put together a playlist of some of her most moving performances. Grab the tissues and watch. Then come back tomorrow to meet #19.
