kpop fav of the day: boy group vocalist #2, jinho of pentagon

Every day until the end of March, we’ll highlight some of our favorite kpop boygroup vocalists on the way to #1.

Sipping his way to the #2 spot is…

Jinho of PENTAGON.

It’s a good thing that voices don’t take up physical space in a person’s body because there is absolutely no way that little bean Jinho would have enough room in him for the tremendous sound that comes from him when he starts to sing.

In every PENTAGON song released up until he went on hiatus to complete his military service, you can pick out his tremendous vocals. Jinho is a powerhouse–pure and simple. And one of the most striking things about him is that he can perform any kind of music with equal ease.

No, really.

You want to hear him rock?

Listen to him belt out Imagine Dragons‘ Natural.

Like your rock with a bit of history? Wait until you hear him perform every single part of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Are pop ballads your thing?

Prepare for him to break your heart with Shallow.

Or maybe you’re a theater geek who loves showtunes…

Don’t worry, Jinho’s got you. You won’t believe how much emotion he pours into Gesthemane from Jesus Christ Superstar.

A big fan of jazz?

Then you need to check him out in Gravity with his hyung Kino.

There are very fewer singers in the world, let alone in kpop, who can take on so many diverse sounds and be so impressive no matter what he tries. It takes not only vocal talent but a deep understanding of music and a heart capable of injecting the right feeling into the lyrics.

Jinho has contributed to PENTAGON in other ways besides his singing. He wrote and produced numerous songs, including All Right, Can’t Forget, One More Night, SUMMER! and To Universe.

I also personally find him incredibly inspiring. Jinho had once been a trainee under SM. He won his spot after winning a singing contest, in which he placed ahead of Xiumin, now of EXO. After that, he was a member of the project group SM the BALLAD, and many people believed he would be revealed as part of EXO. That didn’t happen, though.

He ended up leaving SM and became a vocal coach, but he never abandoned his dream of being an idol. His perseverance paid off. By the eighth week of the TV survival show Pentagon Maker, he had secured his spot to debut in the group. When things get tough for me in my career, I sometimes think of Jinho and how he never gave up.

For his uplifting story, his gorgeous voice and his spirit, Jinho has landed the number two spot on our list of favorite kpop boy group vocalists. Come back tomorrow to meet our number one. Who do you think it is?
