kpop fav of the day: kband/boy group vocalist #8, young k of day6

Every day until the end of March, we’ll highlight one of our favorite boy group singers.

Rocking his way to the #8 spot issss…

…YoungK of Day6.

Even now, I can clearly remember my grandparents’ home. If I close my eyes, I find myself there in the living room with the 1960s scratchy green carpeting and the orange floral couch that we tested the capacity of during every holiday. I can smell the garlic and herbs of my grandmother’s cooking wafting in through the kitchen, making mouths water. But most of all, I can hear the music coming through the single speaker of their phonograph.

An immigrant who arrived in the U.S. via Ellis Island under the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, my grandfather loved the greats from his fellow Italian countrymen. Louie Prima. Dean Martin. Frank Sinatra. Growing up, I heard them all. I learned all the words to their songs, and I grew to love all the old standards.

I thought for a long time that there would never be anyone who could touch my heart with their vocals like those old school crooners. But it turns out, I was wrong. There was someone with just such a voice from a very surprising source–a k-band.

YoungK’s voice has the cool of Frank, the silkiness of Dean, and with nothing but his mouth, he can sound just like Louie’s trumpet. The quality of his voice is like something from another time, and when I listen to his cover of Fly Me to the Moon, tears if nostalgia never fail to flood my eyes–I’m wiping them away as I write this.

What’s truly remarkable about YoungK’s voice, though, is its versatility. He can summon all of the emotion of John Lennon’s aspirational Imagine or a modern pop song like Lauv’s Never Not. He never fails to add the perfect layer of song to Day6’s songs whether it’s a slower ballad like Still, a chill track like How to Love or something that really rocks like Sweet Chaos.

There’s truly nothing he can’t do. And for all of his skill, the beauty of his voice and the way he touches my heart with every note, he has found his way on our favorites list.

I have included a playlist of the covers I mentioned as well as color coded videos for two Day6 songs that he wrote. But really, you can put on any of his covers or a randomly selected Day6 song to hear him at his best.
