kpop fav of the day: kpop boy group & kband vocalist #21, the rose’s kim woosung

Every day until the end of March, we’ll highlight one of our favorite kpop boy group vocalists on a countdown to #1.

Taking his place at #21 on our list is …

Kim Woosung, of The Rose.

First, I wanna say that we know The Rose isn’t an idol boy group. We know. But he is a part of a group and he is an excellent vocalist and so! That counts.

Okay, so my very first exposure to Woosung was his solo song, FACE. I was super delighted not just by the cheeky video dripping (lol) with innuendo, full of diversity and bursting with Woosung’s personality, but the song, too, obviously. I was kind of obsessed with it and wanted to watch it every night for a while.

Part of that was because I couldn’t get enough of his voice. If you’ve ever listened to Woosung sing, you don’t need me to tell you that he’s got one of the most unique voices in the industry.

So unique that those first few times I heard that strange something-like-vibrato that he does at the end of his lines was some sort of production feature.

Literally, I thought someone was playing with his voice like a guitarist might his whammy bar, because to me, that’s exactly what it sounds like.

I only thought it was something they were doing to add to the quirky vibe of the song because it totally worked. That was it.

Like, surely no human was making that noise organically.

I had no reason to think otherwise until my obsession with his voice forced me to branch out and listen to The Rose to get some more of it, and when I did, I was like, holy shit, wait–that’s his voice doing that? He’s making that happen with vocal cords and not by playing with the production?

I couldn’t really come to terms with that entirely until I saw him perform something live for the first time.

When I watched and heard it come out of him on the stage, only then did I finally wholly believe a human being with a voice like that actually existed, and I started to stan.

Even when he’s not hooking the end of his lines like a pinky finger under a whammy bar, his voice has a one of a kind texture that makes every track he sings on something special.

You never get bored listening to him sing, and you’re never going to.

Will there ever be another voice quite like his in the industry?

For all of his incredible control over those vocal cords that makes him stand out so much, he comes in at number 21 on our list.

I put five of my fav examples of his voice on the list below for you to see what I mean if you’re not familiar. You’ll be hooked, too.

Check back tomorrow for #20 on our list!
