fav of the day: boy group vocalist #31, ab6ix’s daehwi

Every day until the end of February, we’ll highlight one of our favorite kpop boy group vocalists on a countdown to #1.

Kicking off the month is….

…Daehwi of AB6IX.

It’s hard to know where to even begin with this post because my love for Lee Daehwi is nearly impossible to put into words. He’s an absolute sweetheart. He’s incredibly fearless, and it’s obvious he loves his fans so much. And just LOOK at him:

But we’re here to talk about Daehwi’s singing voice not all of the other reasons why he’s an absolute gift to humanity. Sooo here I go.

First off–he has a POWERFUL voice. I don’t know how it comes out of his teenie tiny body, but somehow it does. When he sings live, he’s an absolute force. He might not have the huge range of a lot of idols, but I promise you this: mic malfunctions definitely don’t keep him up at night. Daehwi’s ready to belt it out.

And then there’s the quality of his voice itself. There is almost a metallic quality to his tone like he’s some small, fabulous robot from the future here to sing for the good of mankind to stave off an alien apocalypse or something. Seriously, there’s no other voice quite like it. It’s worthy of such an epic description.

That one-of-a-kind character can influence songs in different ways. In a track like his solo song Rose Scent Kiss, it’s sensual and alluring. In a love song like Wanna One‘s Hide & Seek, it becomes sweet and poignant. It can be fierce and aggressive like in AB6IX‘s song Salute or regal and lofty like it is in his Heroine collab with Sunmi.

Daehwi puts tons of expression into his voice. Even though I can’t speak Korean well, I can get a feel for what he’s communicating because of it. You can hear it come through in his duet with groupmate Woojin, Candle, and in his duet with Ong Seongwu, Hourglass. Both of these songs are pretty straightforward ballads, but his expressiveness makes them so, so moving.

And despite how much his voice stands out, it also blends beautifully with others’, making him an asset for duets as well as for AB6IX and Wanna One.

For all that he is, Daehwi has earned his spot on our favs list. Check out the YouTube list below to hear all of the songs I mentioned, and come back tomorrow to meet #30.
