fav of the day: rapper #10, mcnd’s bic

Every day until the end of February, we’ll highlight one of our favorite Korean rappers on a countdown to #1.

Coming in at the number 10 spot is…

Mary Tyler Moore.

Yeah, Mary Tyler Moore.

As you know, I am too old to be this into k-pop, and so I won’t be surprised if you don’t know who that is. She was a legendary television actress, best known for The Dick Van Dyke Show and then The Mary Tyler Moore Show. That show aired from 1970 to 1977 and it had a pretty groovy theme song. I invite you to experience it (I promise there’s a point to this)

The first lines of this theme song go

who can turn the world on with her smile?

who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it seem worthwhile?

Now the reason why I’m sharing with you this golden age of television history has to do with those lines because when I see our real number 10 rapper doing a performance or in a music video, I think of them.

They call his name B.I.C.~ from MCND and just look at his smile!

No, really look at it…

I mean REALLY look at it…

I don’t think you’re looking hard enough. Look one. more. time here on the left.

All it takes is one smile from BIC, and BOOM my nothing day suddenly seems all worthwhile. He just radiates light, and one of the things I love most about BIC is that you can hear his smile in his voice when he raps.

I love a lot of kpop rappers who have hard aggressive sounds or who rap about deep important issues, but there’s something equally satisfying about hearing an idol rapper that is both crazy talented and just absolutely experiencing joy because they love what they’re doing. BIC is obviously loving every verse he delivers.

And BIC has crazy talented covered, too.

He’s quick, he’s clean, and even though MCND’s lyrics aren’t exactly poetry, his delivery feels like storytellings with all of the expressiveness he puts into it. He’s not really a vocalist but he could sometimes fool me with the melody that his verses often carry. BIC doesn’t just use the beat as a jump point like so many other rappers–he uses it as an anchor to ground his colorful verses while still exploring everything he can within each one.

MCND just debuted last year. I have a feeling they’re bound for big things, and BIC is one of the biggest reasons why they’re gonna make it after all.

You can check out his skills and listen for his smile with our mini playlist. And don’t forget to stop by tomorrow when we’ll be revealing number nine on our list and how they relate to Dick Van Dyke (just kidding about Dick Van Dyke (or are we?).
