Every day until the end of February, we’ll highlight one of our favorite Korean rappers on a countdown to #1.
Cozy in his spot at #13 is…
… MCND’s Castle J.
Knowing he was coming up on this list has had me, for several days, trying to figure out how best to describe Castle J’s voice and style.
As a writer, I think I’m supposed to be composed of 75% metaphor, 15% smilie, 5% coffee and 5% self-loathing (and 100% questionable Google search history, but that’s neither here nor there).
Even so, I’m having a hard time figuring out how best to talk about the masterpiece that is this slept-on idol rapper.
Allow me then to do my best by presenting a bulleted list of ways I would describe Castle J’s voice–and know that I absolutely mean each one as a compliment:
- Whatever the name of the guy who would win the Annie Award for Voice Acting for 50 years straight would be
- A soundboard preloaded with all of the weirdest noises you can collect from humankind pressed at random
- That really satisfying, scratchy yell you can give when you’re alone in the middle of a field all alone
- What it would be like if you were to do that same scream at top volume seconds before it gets sucked into a black hole
- The squeaker inside of a fluffy dog toy if you hold it in front of a box fan
- How it would sound if you distorted the growl of a wolf who is probably about to eat you
- The propeller on the back of a speed boat
I could keep going but I’m not going to get anywhere close to actually describing this guy’s voice. I promise, I’ve tried. Really.
The fact that I can’t supports my point all on its own. Not only is it seriously indescribable and unique, it is so expressive on top of it and he is so talented on top of it.
Castle J is like… hm. If you went to a playground with every piece of play equipment you could possibly fit in an acre of land and ran around playing on every single piece of it in rapid succession. Binging and boinging off of all of those colorful hunks of plastic and hot metal and weird squishy mulch stuff…
Hm. His voice is the rap equivalent of a Bop-It.
Aha! Bop-It! I’m totally showing my age but we’re all too old to be into kpop here, right? Right!
Look, that’s the best I can do, and it is the highest compliment. If you can do it better, I invite you to in the comments.
In all seriousness, though, Castle J is ridiculously talented.
He’s got the style, he’s got the speed, he’s got the articulation, and my absolute favorite sound in the world is when he yells. Screams. I mean he SCREAMS at the top of his lungs and somehow instead of being grating it is super sexy?
I don’t know. Dude’s magic. You’ll never hear anything as colorful as you’ll hear when you listen to him rap. Promise.
For all of his indescribability and what he brings to MCND, Castle J makes it to our list of fav rappers at #13.
I’ll put together a little sample of some of my favorite Castle J verses below but seriously… if you haven’t listened to MCND before, please go check out their whole discography. t’s impossible to show how awesome Castle J is in only five songs. And I promise–you won’t have to guess which of the amazing rappers in MCND that I’m talking about when you start listening.
As always, don’t forget to check back tomorrow for #12!
