fav of the day: rapper #16, exid’s le

Every day until the end of February, we’ll highlight one of our favorite Korean rappers on a countdown to #1.

Coming in at #16 is….

EXID‘s LE.

Considering that EXID‘s 9-year debut anniversary is this week, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to sing the praises of LE.

LE or Ahn Hyojin left a huge mark on kpop over the course of her career. She’s written songs not just for EXID but also for Fiestar, DIA, Boys Republic and Secret. In addition, she’s the talented writer behind the debut song for girl group TRI.BE.

But we’re here to talk about what LE‘s best known for: her rap. So how do I love her? Let me count the ways.

  1. STYLE.

LE has a distinct quality to her flows. She’s playful. She’s exciting, and she’s not afraid to do the unexpected.

2. VERSATILITY.

There’s literally nothing LE can’t do. If the track’s chill, she can bring the mellow. For an upbeat EXID song, she fits the mood and takes things to the next level, helping to define the group’s sound. And she can hold her own with the boys in a fast-paced, high energy all hip-hop track, too. She proved this rapping as Elly with the underground rap group Jiggy Fellaz.

3. LEGACY.

You can absolutely hear LE‘s influence on second wave third gen and fourth gen girl group rappers. She was arguably one of the first lady k-rappers to be bold enough to break out of the cutesy baby-voice style that was common before her time. It’s hard to see how you get the other badass girl group rappers we have on this countdown if LE hadn’t paved the way.

You can hear some of my favorite examples of LE‘s skills and style on this mini playlist.
