fav of the day: rapper #23, dreamcatcher’s dami

Every day until the end of February, we’ll highlight one of our favorite Korean rappers on a countdown to #1.

Stepping in to claim the 23th spot is…

Dreamcatcher’s Dami.

There is really nothing in kpop quite like Dreamcatcher. I can’t imagine the concept planning meeting for this group.

Guy in Suit Number One: “Okay so we want to make a new girl group…”

Guy in Suit Number Two: “Okay, great. Girl group. So we’ll start writing some bubble gum songs–“

Guy in Suit Number One: “Not so fast. I was thinking they’d be more hard rock. Almost metal.”

Guy in Suit Number Two: “….”

Guy in Suit Number One: “And each of the girls will represent a phobia.”

Guy in Suit Number Two: *starts sweating*

Guy in Suit Number One: “…and they’re still going to do choreography and have rap in the songs…”

Guy in Suit Number Two: “Hey…look at that bird!” *points out the window* *runs out of the room*

When you really think about what Dreamcatcher is, it’s crazy that it works but it does, and it ROCKS, literally. It’s hard enough to figure out how to make pop-esque vocals go with heavy metal music, but imagine trying to add rap into the mix. Think of the challenges of that and you can appreciate how difficult a task it would be for Dami to approach her lines in the group’s songs, but she never fails to be perfect.

In many, many kpop songs, the rap part feels like something that’s just tacked on. You could remove it from the song and it wouldn’t change anything. And in girl groups, it sadly often seems like the rapper is just some girl who is super pretty and can’t sing well enough to be a vocalist.

Dami is something else entirely. She has the technical skill to rap fast but can also bring powerful, forceful lines at a measured pace. Without fail, she adds something to every song, and Dreamcatcher (and my stan heart) wouldn’t be the same without her.

She’s been fantastic ever since the girls were known as MINX, and I feel like on Dystopia: Road to Utopia, she really got to show off her versatility. If you haven’t listened to that album yet, you should fix that problem immediately. You can also check out my mini play list for more of Dami.

  1. Cool article. I am from U.S. and have been listening to metal since I was teen in the 80’s. Now that I am older, I listen to a wide array of stuff. I happened upon Dreamcatcher, Boca and Scream, on YouTube and was mesmerized. As far as the total package in a music video, very very entertaining. Other KPOP I enjoy – BLACKPINK, TWICE, STAYC, ITSY, and the group who sings “Hwaa”. That song found its way into my Facebook feed and it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. But out of all of them Dami is my favorite rapper, definitely a powerful delivery.
